The Monday Morning “Goodwill Hunting” Report

Hi, my darlings! I know, I know. It’s Monday. There’s not much help for it. LOL So, grab a cup of coffee or tea, pull up a chair, and I’ll show you what I did this weekend!

I guess I should be excited that I found a solid, well-built coffee table, but the fact that I had to buy one at all is all kinds of aggravating. I’ll tell you about that in a sec. But I’m super-excited about two of my other purchases this weekend!

I was SO excited to FINALLY find a pair of sconces I can rewire for my antique door hall tree/nightstands I’m building for my bedroom makeover! This is one element I’ve been on the hunt for forever and I was starting to think I might have to buy a set *gasp* new! Thank goodness the Gods of Thrifting took pity on me and put these lovelies (or soon-to-be lovelies) right in my path at only $2 bucks a piece!

The Girl Child found a really cute Limited Express tailored blouse that is like new in a lovely peach color and with french cuffs! It rang in at $3.

I found another black peasant skirt and, of course, me being me, I had to buy it. I figure if I finally have too many of them, I can always give some to BFF Lisa. LOL This one has a very full underskirt and rang in at $3. Will be awesome for RenFaire/Festival season!

I saw also all kinds of excited to find this large Eiffel Tower picture in perfect condition for $6! It’s gonna be awesome in the bedroom, since so many other elements are Paris/Travel themed! I was originally thinking of doing a gallery wall, but I think I’m going to do a focal wall, instead, around this picture.

I’ll be honest – this coffee table is not my favorite. To be fair, it is in nice condition, large, and very solid. But, it’s hunter green (ugh) and stained wood with kind of country-ish legs. It rung in at $19.96. This is going to be a challenge piece, for sure. But, since it is big and sturdy, The Hubster actually made the final call to buy it, confident that I could work some major magic on the piece. Let’s hope he’s right.

On the upside, when we got the table home, we opened the drawer and found that there was a complete foldable chess set inside. So, that was kind of a weird and funny. Nice, though, because a) I like anything free, and b) we do play chess. LOL

OK, so, here’s the skinny on why I am facing a coffee table challenge (and you fellow bloggers with little ones, pay attention – your time will come. LOL)

For Christmas, The Little Brother, who’s eighteen and in his first year of college, got the entire six-movie deluxe Star Wars box set. This past weekend, he got his eight closest friends – all friends for years – to come over for a Star Wars movie marathon and commandeered the downstairs big-screen HD surround sound TV. After sixteen hours of wall-shaking noise, cases upon cases of soda, and uncounted snacks, I was informed that the Ikea glass coffee table that held the 40+ can pyramid was, in fact, broken and that 40+ soda cans were all over the floor. The fact that I didn’t hear 40+ soda cans hitting the floor should give you an idea of the sound level in my house at that moment. Yeesh…

There are disputing reports as to how the table was broken. But this is the same table, the day after the marathon, with the broken leg propped up under it. That’s The Little Brother asleep on the right. (Note the leftover boy asleep on the left. Waking up with extraneous kids in my house is not particularly unusual. LOL)

These are some of the building materials used to make the aforementioned pyramid. LOL There were many more cans to be found in and around the game and family rooms.

So, we went out this weekend to find a coffee table to replace the Ikea, and that was the best I could come up with. On the upside, it was only $20, so if I find something I like better (maybe glass and more modern, please?), this will be an excellent sturdier and larger coffee table than the one we have in the game room. My challenge, though, is to see if I can make it so awesome that I won’t even want to look for a replacement. Hmmmm…

And finally, I made a smaller version Reclaimed Deck Wood Coat Rack for BFF Denise with Love and Laugh hooks I found a few weeks ago! I’m collecting hook sets I find to make more of these, for both gifts and for sale.

I love the hooks, but Denise’s woodwork at home is darker, so they kind of blended into the darker stain I used. I brightened them up by spraying some gold paint onto a paper plate, dabbing it with a dry paper towel, and dragging the paper towel across the hooks. Made them pop!

So, to paraphrase BFF Monica, who came up to this weekend, my house “is always like a tornado” – especially on weekends, with movie marathons, poker nights, middle-school BFF sleepovers, music collaborations, video game tournaments, etc. – and things do tend to get broken in a tornado. But, I’m glad my kids’ friends are comfortable coming over here and feel welcome. It’s nice to have them all here and safe, especially now that they are older and driving and could be so many other not-so-safe places.

So, I’ll chalk the Ikea table up to another opportunity to do something amazing and just be glad that my kids still don’t mind hanging out around their mom. Winking smile

Stay tuned to see how the table turns out! And wish me a lot of luck! LOL

You have kids that age? You LOOK that age (that's a good thing).

I like the table, lol, but look forward to seeing what it looks like w/a transformation, and congrats on the finds, the sconces are great!

I love the sconces, like the table, and am kind of leary of what I will face now when my kids hit their teens.
Seriously Tho' Kristy, if you finish that table and find one you like even better anyway, let me know…we're in search of a new coffee table too…now that I don't have to worry about my babies hitting their head on the corners anymore.

Oh, I think you have inspired me to revamp my husband's UGLY dresser. I REALLY should do something about it. I mean it was free, but I have all sorts of ideas for it now. THANK YOU! 😀
