Well, hi again, friends! Are you feeling a little downhearted, reading some gorgeous blogs full of wonderful projects, and maybe you’re thinking, “Mine don’t work out like that!”
Allow me to let you in on a little secret – mine don’t always, either!
So, since it’s all rainy outside and I can’t blog from my Chaise Lounge on my deck (doesn’t that sound all fancy? LOL), pull up a chair and a cuppa, and tag along for my lastest FAIL!
Let’s go back to my daughter’s Steampunk-inspired bedroom that I’ve been working on. Remember the awesome Desk Do-Over? The cute Posh Pet Bed Steps? The Pinterest-Inspired Pet Bed? Even the recent Free DIY Frame Matting trick for her beloved Johnny Depp poster? Oh, they turned out so well! I had my next project all ready to tackle – her window.
Doesn’t that look great?!?! Yeah, well, don’t get too excited. LOL Looks can be deceiving…
Here’s what I did:
I got myself an inexpensive shade from K-Mart and knew white just was NOT going to cut it in my daughter’s red, black, and gold Victorian steampunk room. So I headed to JoAnn’s Fabrics with said daughter in hand, who proceeded to pick out this gorgeous black and gold lace. It was on sale (score!), so I let her get it.
I hung the shade up in the garage – or my workroom, as I like to refer to it, so people who don’t FOLLOW MY BLOG! think I’m all fancy and stuff (did you like how I did that there? Hint, hint!!).
I grabbed some of my favorite black leftover spray paint and proceeded to paint the shade. I mean, I am already in on this project for the price of a new cheap shade and on-sale lace. Gotta cut the budget somewhere, right?
OK, paint is done and well-dried and my Cairn Terrier, Gypsy, just photobombed my picture. That probably should have been an omen.
I went into her room and installed the shade! It looks awesome! She’s ectastic! It matches the lace on her antique top hat! (Yes, she wears an antique top hap – long story.) All is right with the world! Go, Mom! Go, Mom! Go, Mom!
I am an AWESOME MOM! Behold my glory!
Except for one thing – it won’t open. Not a bit.
So I made this face:
It didn’t help. Still won’t open. It’s a very dark, obstinate shade.
And the daughter was looking at me with a very dark, unhappy look. She was NOT saying, “Go, Mom!” any longer. And her face was significantly less happy than mine even. Uh-oh.
I left the room in shame. I couldn’t take down the shade, because I had no quick fix for the problem. Heck, I don’t even know what the problem IS! The daughter silently glowered at me and shut the door in my face. That was the end of my mom-glory.
My daughter is a terrifying short person when she’s angry. I’m probably lucky I escaped with my shins intact.
Soooooo, now, I’m hunting for ways to fix the problem, so she will let me do more stuff in her room that I can blog about. If you have any suggestions, let me know! LOL Otherwise, I will *hopefully* be posting the solution soon – before my daughter turns into a cave-dweller!
What has been your most disappointing project fail? I’d love to hear about it! Misery loves company!

I am cracking up right now– You rocked this shade..but dang it– it won't open! hmmm.. lol Sharing on FB right now- You Stinky Shade you!!
It's looks great Christy…did the "spring" unwind somehow? On the end of the shade there is a little tab that sticks out, sometimes it unwinds so you have to wind it up again. that has happened to me several times…hope that's the problem because it is an easy fix!
As someone who just superglued the arm of her favorite sunglasses (open, at least they aren't stuck in the folded position), I should not be consulted on glue matters. Good luck because it looks good down!
Terri, I will check into that!!! Wouldn't that be awesome if that were all it was! Thank you!
LOL! Thank you so much! Nice to know I'm not alone!
Well, sometimes, if you don't laugh about it, you'll cry! Thank you!
Sometimes you need to reroll the shade manually, then install it in the bracket. When you pull it down, the internal mechanism winds up and tightens. Then it has power to roll up. Kind of like those little cars that you have to push backwards to rev up and then let go. Good luck!
So funny!!
LOL Thanks! At least some humor came out of it. But, hey, that's blog fodder, at least, right?
